Guro Tribe Ceremonial Mask

The Guro tribe is a spiritual people and their masks are representations of their way of life. This 20th century piece from the Ivory Coast renders the spirit of Gu, wife of the supernatural being Zamble. Each Guro mask is similar but not identical, including a combination of human and animal characteristics and often depicting fantastical creatures. The snake on this mask is for protection and the bird for luck. Often different types of birds can be seen carved into these masks, which were commonly used in traditional ceremonies like funerals, weddings, and animal sacrifices. Today the people of the Ivory Coast honor their ancestors through traditional dance and these beautiful masks show their loyalty to the past.
