The Estherville stony iron mesosiderite was an observed fall near Emmet County, Iowa, on May 10, 1879. The fall was spectacular, described as explosive – like a fireball split the sky. This rare meteorite fragmented into several pieces as it hurtled toward the earth, and two people in a rig on the prairie six miles to the west of Estherville reported that they were positioned directly underneath it when it shattered above them.
