Muonionalusta is a meteorite classified as a fine octahedrite which impacted in northern Scandinavia west of the border between Sweden and Finland about one million years BCE. The first Muonionalusta was found in 1906 and it is probably the oldest known meteorite at roughly 4.5 billion years old. This specimen is part of the meteorite's iron core or mantle, which shattered into many pieces upon its fall to our planet. On Earth, it has experienced four ice ages. Mainly comprised of a combination of nickel and iron, the meteorite displays a very distinct type of etching know as the Widmanstätten pattern. Appearance may differ slightly from photo.
