Astro West is owned and run by Marc Tanjeloff, a third generation curator and store owner. His grandfather, Julio Tanjeloff, turned Astro Minerals into a lavish 16,000 square foot gallery showcasing items from all over the world, from fine minerals to dinosaur fossils. Julio also created the periodical Mineral Digest, and was the first person to bring the mineral Tanjeloffite – more commonly known as Tanzanite – to the United States.
Marc’s new venture, Astro West, pays tribute to his grandfather and focuses more in-depth on mineral collecting. Marc was drawn further into the mineral game early on in his career through meeting and becoming involved with the extensive collection of mineral enthusiast Marc Weill. In addition, Marc Tanjeloff worked with the prominent collector Lida Hill to build her collection through the 2000s. In 2008, Tanjeloff helped Chris Burch start a collection of minerals and an incredible tantalite/sphene specimen was brought to Marc’s attention. The very next day, Astro Mining Incorporated came into existence and Marc was on a plane to Tanzania, where he bought land.
In 2015, a son on the way inspired Marc to expand the family business to a new location on the West side that brings his discerning eye and passion for fine minerals to every customer and every piece.
Marc’s commitment to innovation is evident in his adoption of modern technologies. Astro West accepts cryptocurrency, reflecting his forward-thinking approach to business: “You have to keep changing and adapting or you’re going to have a ‘closed’ sign on your door.”
Marc is actively involved in the community and recognized for his contributions as well as highly recommended by local business owners. He has received accolades for his work in the fields of minerals and fossils.
Through his dedication and passion, Marc Tanjeloff continues to uphold and expand his family’s legacy in the gem and mineral industry, making significant contributions to both the business and the broader community. He blends three generations of his mineral‑collecting heritage with his own professional insights in an ever authentic and ethical way.
